Description

Explosion-proof Part-turn Electric Actuator Overview

The explosion-proof part-turn electric actuator series BJ/BJM40-IIC from Bonray. combines intelligent electronics with rugged mechanical construction to deliver reliable valve control in demanding industrial environments. This guide focuses on practical aspects: mechanical installation, electrical wiring, parameter setup, and field commissioning. Every unit leaves the factory fully tested, but you must perform proper installation to achieve the IP68 rating and ensure safe operation. The actuator provides output torque from 50 N·m to 3000 N·m and angular travel 0‑90° (adjustable ±5°). You can mount it directly onto any ISO 5211:2017 flanged valve. The patented planetary gear transmission eliminates the manual/electric clutch, so you never need to switch between manual and motor operation – simply turn the handwheel at any time.

The non‑intrusive magnetic knobs allow you to set limits, adjust torque values, and configure outputs without removing the electrical cover. This guide walks you through each step, from unpacking to final commissioning, and includes wiring diagrams for the most common control schemes. We also explain how to use the absolute encoder to its full advantage and how to set the optional 4‑20 mA control loop. By following Bonray’s instructions, you will have your part-turn intelligent electric actuator online quickly and safely, even in hazardous areas (flameproof versions available). For special requirements like fieldbus integration or split‑mount remote control, refer to the relevant sections and contact Bonray support for configuration files (GSD files for Profibus, EDS for DeviceNet, etc.).

Explosion-proof Part-turn Electric Actuator Features

While the previous articles covered all features in detail, here we highlight those most relevant to installation and commissioning.

1. Non‑Intrusive Magnetic Knob Programming

You do not need to open the electrical housing to set the actuator. The two external knobs (selector knob and operating knob) use Hall sensors. You can also use the optional infrared setting tool from up to 1 meter away. This feature keeps the electronics safe from dust, moisture, and corrosive gases.

2. Absolute Position Encoder – No Battery Backup

The BM12 absolute encoder eliminates the need for batteries or periodic re‑calibration after power loss. When you power up the actuator, it immediately displays the true valve position. This simplifies commissioning and improves reliability.

3. Direct Torque Measurement with Real‑Time Display

The patented absolute encoding torque sensor shows the actual output torque on the LCD. You can set a torque protection limit (30‑100% of rated torque) via the menu. The actuator will trip if torque exceeds the limit during operation.

4. Automatic Phase Sequence Correction

When you connect three‑phase power, the actuator automatically determines the phase rotation and applies the correct contactor. You do not need to swap wires to change motor direction. This saves time and prevents damage from incorrect wiring.

5. Double Sealed Terminal Box

The terminal box has two separate sealing layers. Even with the outer cover removed for wiring, the inner seal protects the control board. After completing wiring, replace the outer cover and tighten the screws to restore full IP68 protection.

6. Configurable Output Relays (Bistable or Monostable)

Depending on the wiring diagram, you get either magnetic latching (bistable) relays or standard monostable relays. You can assign each relay to any valve state (open limit, close limit, torque trip, running, intermediate position, etc.) and choose whether the relay closes or opens when the state occurs.

7. Comprehensive Alarm Output (MONI)

The MONI relay changes state when any alarm condition occurs: phase loss, motor overheat, simultaneous open/close command, analog signal loss, ESD active, parameter setting mode, or internal fault. The NC contact connects to COM during alarm, while the NO contact disconnects.

8. Manual Handwheel with No Clutch

The handwheel connects directly to the gear train through a planetary differential mechanism. You can turn the handwheel even while the motor runs. This is useful for manual override or for freeing a stuck valve without disengaging any clutch.

9. Infrared Setting Tool (Optional)

The hand‑held infrared setter communicates through the transparent window on the cover. You can adjust all parameters from a distance, which is especially useful for actuators mounted in high or hard‑to‑reach locations.

10. Local/Remote Selector with LED Indication

The “Local/Remote” knob selects control source. LEDs show the active mode and valve position status. When you set the knob to “Remote”, the actuator accepts signals from the terminal block. When you set it to “Local”, you control the valve using the operating knob.

Model and Type

For installation purposes, identify your actuator’s exact model from the nameplate. The model code tells you torque, flange, speed, power, and options.

How do I set the close and open limits without opening the cover?

  • Set the selector knob to “Local”.

  • Press and hold the magnetic operating knob until the LCD shows “Limit setting”.

  • Follow the on‑screen prompts: use the knob to move the valve to the desired closed position, then press to confirm. Then move to the open position and confirm.

  • The actuator stores the limits in non‑volatile memory.
You can also set limits using the infrared setter.
