Description

Overview

Modern process plants demand a quarter-turn explosion-proof actuator that does more than just open and close a valve. It must talk to PLCs, accept remote setpoints, report its health, and fail safely. The BJ/BJM15-IIC Series from Bonray (a factory specializing in high-integrity valve automation) delivers this level of intelligence. This quarter-turn explosion-proof actuator integrates absolute position and torque sensors, a multi-language LCD, and plug-in fieldbus cards. You get a device that not only moves a butterfly valve but also becomes a node in your Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) network.

The factory builds each quarter-turn explosion-proof actuator around a planetary gearbox that eliminates the hand/auto shift mechanism – a common source of failure and maintenance. With output torque from 50 to 3000 N.m and a compact footprint, this actuator fits any quarter-turn valve. You control it via analog (4-20mA), digital (dry contacts or voltage), or digital bus (Profibus, Modbus, Devicenet, Hart, FF). The non-intrusive interface allows you to change parameters, read torque profiles, and diagnose faults without opening the housing, preserving the IP68 seal.

Features

1. Absolute Encoder Technology

  • The factory uses a non-contact BM12 single-turn encoder for valve position.

  • A separate absolute torque sensor reads actual output torque.

  • No batteries needed. Power loss does not affect position memory.

  • Accuracy remains stable from -30°C to +70°C.

2. Fieldbus-Ready Architecture

  • The main control board includes a standard 4-20mA input/output.

  • You plug a daughter card into the bus slot: Profibus-DP (V0 or V1), Modbus RTU (half or full duplex), Devicenet, FF, Hart, or even wireless (4G, LoRa, Bluetooth).

  • The quarter-turn explosion-proof actuator appears as a slave on the bus, sharing position, torque, alarms, and accepting setpoints.

3. Redundant Bus Option

  • For critical services (e.g., pipeline stations), the factory offers dual bus cards.

  • If one bus card fails, the second card takes over automatically.

  • Redundant Profibus or Modbus cards are available.

4. Data Logging and Diagnostics

  • The actuator stores peak torque values, number of starts, and total travel.

  • You retrieve this data via the IR setter or bus communication.

  • Predictive maintenance: track torque trends to detect valve wear before a failure.

5. ESD with Selectable Override Logic

  • Program ESD to act as “close”, “open”, or “freeze” (disable all motion).

  • Choose whether ESD overrides a local stop command or a motor overheat condition.

  • ESD can be active-high (24Vdc or 220Vac) or active-low (0V).

6. Loss of Signal Protection

  • In analog control mode, you configure the actuator’s behavior when the 4-20mA signal drops below 3.6mA.

  • Options: stay put, go to full open, go to full closed, or go to a preset position.

  • The quarter-turn explosion-proof actuator reports a “Signal Loss” alarm via relay or bus.

7. Dual-Stable Relays for Power-Off Memory

  • The 62x wiring series uses magnetic latching relays for S1-S4 outputs.

  • Even if you cut power to the actuator, the relay contacts maintain their last state.

  • Critical alarms (e.g., over-torque) do not disappear when the power cycles.

Model and Type

The factory divides the quarter-turn explosion-proof actuator range by duty cycle and control complexity. Choose based on your required starts per hour and positioning precision.

Does this quarter-turn explosion-proof actuator support Modbus TCP/IP over Ethernet?

Not directly on the standard card. However, the factory offers a Modbus RTU-to-TCP gateway that you install near the actuator. The gateway converts the serial signal to Ethernet. Alternatively, choose the Profinet option (available on request).
